Airbnb is shaking up its top policy role, according to Skift. The company announced Tuesday that David Spielfogel, formerly chief business officer at Lime, will become its new Global Head of Public Policy.

CEO Brian Chesky informed employees via email that Spielfogel will succeed Jay Carney, who has led both policy and communications at Airbnb since July 2022. Carney is leaving the company.

Spielfogel brings a background in city-level short-term rental regulation, having worked on the issue for then-Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel from 2010 to 2016. His appointment signals a potential shift in Airbnb’s approach to regulatory battles.

While Carney reported directly to Chesky, Spielfogel will report to co-founder Nate Blecharczyk. Carney also oversaw communications, a role now handled by Fallon O’Connor.

The choice of a cities-and-operations veteran over a former White House press secretary suggests Airbnb may adopt a more aggressive ground game in policy negotiations going forward, according to Skift’s analysis.
