Mallorca Sea Hits 33°C as Climate and Overtourism Collide
For decades, Northern Europeans have flown to Mallorca expecting reliable sunshine, warm beaches and the cooling blue Mediterranean. This summer, the sea itself is no longer a guaranteed refuge from the heat.
A buoy near Sa Dragonera, off Mallorca’s western coast, registered a water temperature of 33.02°C (91.4°F) on August 7, 2026, according to reports citing Spain’s national weather agency AEMET. Spanish public broadcaster RTVE described it as the highest reading ever recorded in Spanish waters. The western Mediterranean is currently running about 4°C above its long-term average in some areas.
For an island sold on sun and sea, 33°C water is an extraordinary number. But it is part of a much larger story — not simply ‘a hot summer.’
Individual records are shaped by winds, currents, sunshine and shallow-water effects. It would be wrong to say climate change alone caused that buoy to read precisely 33.02°C. Yet the background against which such records occur has shifted dramatically.
Copernicus research shows Mediterranean sea-surface temperature warmed by roughly 0.41°C per decade between 1982 and 2023 — about 1.7°C over four decades. Other analyses put the trend at 0.37°C to 0.41°C per decade. That means the Mediterranean background is now about 0.4°C warmer than a decade ago and roughly 0.8°C warmer than 20 years ago, though natural variation can make individual summers much hotter or cooler.
Research on the extraordinary 2025 Mediterranean marine heatwave found that long-term warming amplified extreme sea-surface-temperature anomalies by as much as 1.5°C when compared with analogous weather patterns in the earlier climate. Human-caused greenhouse-gas emissions are the principal driver of this warming environment.
The contrast with a decade ago is striking. Historical coastal data for Palma show an average August sea temperature of about 26°C in 2016. In 2022 the comparable average reached 28.9°C; in 2023 it was around 28°C, and in 2025 approximately 27.6°C. The new 33.02°C reading is an individual observation from a different location, not directly comparable to monthly averages — but it shows how far today’s marine heat extremes can move above historical norms.
Across the entire Mediterranean basin, average daily sea-surface temperature reached a record 28.7°C on August 13, 2024, beating the 28.3°C basin record set in July 2023. Mallorca’s reading is almost 4.5°C warmer than that already exceptional basin-wide average.
Is 33°C the hottest seawater on Earth? No. NOAA Coral Reef Watch data from July 20, 2026, showed the western Persian Gulf at 34.2°C and waters around Bahrain at 34.3°C. The Gulf of Aqaba was at 29.5°C. During the July 2023 Florida marine heatwave, a sensor at Manatee Bay recorded 38.4°C, though NOAA noted it was an estuarine site. Florida Keys reef waters reached 33.6°C on July 13 that year.
The important story is not that Mallorca has become hotter than the Persian Gulf. It is that a Mediterranean vacation destination is beginning to experience water temperatures previously associated with subtropical and tropical seas.
The swimming pool gets warmer while the island gets fuller. Mallorca’s climate story cannot easily be separated from its tourism story.
The Balearic island remains one of Europe’s most successful leisure destinations. Germans dominate its international air market, followed by the British. Palma de Mallorca Airport handled 33.8 million passengers in 2025, up 1.5% from 2024 — about 9.84 million on German routes and 5.92 million on British routes. The airport recorded 246,486 aircraft movements. Growth continued in 2026: in May alone, Palma handled 4,009,687 passengers, a 4.9% increase over May 2025, including more than 3.17 million international travelers.
Mallorca is no longer merely a short-haul playground for Europeans. United Airlines launched a nonstop Newark–Palma route in 2022 and expanded its seasonal operation, placing the island within nonstop reach of New York.
For Mallorca’s tourism economy, that global popularity is enormous success. For many residents, it has become the problem.
On July 26, 2026, days before the ocean-temperature record, tens of thousands marched through Palma under the slogan ‘Mallorca al límit’ — Mallorca at the limit. Organized by the platform Menys Turisme, Més Vida (Less Tourism, More Life), the demonstration demanded limits on visitor numbers and measures to ease severe housing pressures. Protesters also cited traffic congestion, pollution, pressure on natural resources and climate change as evidence that the current tourism model has exceeded the island’s carrying capacity.
Much of the movement insists it is not opposed to individual tourists. Its target is a tourism-dependent economic model whose sheer scale, protesters argue, is making housing, transportation and everyday life increasingly difficult for permanent residents. But that distinction can disappear when demonstrations feature ‘Tourists Go Home’ signs. The result is a strange paradox: Mallorca continues spending enormous energy attracting travelers while some residents take to the streets demanding fewer of them.
Visitors are also noticing that Mallorca is no longer necessarily an inexpensive Mediterranean escape. Official Spanish data, as reported by eturbonews.com, indicate hotel prices have risen — though not demonstrably ten times more expensive. The island’s dual pressures of warming waters and overtourism are reshaping what a Mallorcan summer means.
